Angola reports decline in adolescent fertility amid gender gaps
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) in Angola, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has released thematic reports on gender and adolescent fertility. The data shows a 25.2% reduction in adolescent fertility rates, dropping from 163 to 122 births per thousand adolescents between the 2015–2016 and 2023–2024 periods.
However, this decline is unevenly distributed. Urban areas saw a 33.3% reduction, while rural areas experienced an 18.4% decrease, highlighting disparities in access to sexual and reproductive health services.
Educational inequalities also persist. Literacy rates show a significant gap, with 87% of men able to read and write compared to 65% of women. In secondary education, enrollment stands at 62.1% for men and 48.7% for women, while higher education enrollment remains below 10% for both genders.
