Angola adolescent fertility and pregnancy trends
Overview
Recent data from Angola’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) indicates a significant decline in adolescent pregnancy and fertility rates over the last decade. National prevalence for girls aged 15 to 19 dropped from 34.5% to 27.1%, while fertility rates fell from 163 to 122 births per thousand adolescents between the 2015–2016 and 2023–2024 periods.
Despite these improvements, substantial regional and demographic disparities persist. Urban areas have seen a 33.3% reduction in fertility, compared to an 18.4% decrease in rural areas. Regional data shows high prevalence in provinces such as Cuanza Sul (51.4%), while Luanda recorded the lowest rate at 13.9%.
The reports also highlight ongoing gender inequalities regarding education and literacy. While literacy stands at 87% for men, it is 65% for women. Secondary education enrollment also shows a gap, with 62.1% for men and 48.7% for women.
