Angola reports surge in Mpox cases with focus on Cabinda
Angola is experiencing a rapid expansion of Mpox cases, with 593 total cases recorded and two deaths reported in the provinces of Cabinda and Uíge. Recent data shows 15 new cases within a 24-hour period across the provinces of Cabinda, Moxico-Leste, Lunda-Sul, and Moxico.
Cabinda remains the most heavily affected region, concentrating the majority of active infections. In response to the surge, health authorities in Cabinda have ordered the temporary closure of guesthouses and lodging units that fail to meet required hygiene and sanitary safety standards to prevent further transmission chains.
National Director of Public Health, Helga Freitas, noted that the disease has a long incubation period and prolonged treatment times, contributing to the high number of active cases. The most affected demographic has been females aged 20 to 24. Authorities are currently monitoring hundreds of contacts and have increased surveillance near borders with the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
