Mpox outbreaks expanding in Kenya, Angola, and DRC
Overview
Mpox outbreaks continue to expand across several African nations. In Kenya, the epidemic has spread to more than 40 counties, with the Ministry of Health reporting 1,298 confirmed cases and 19 deaths. Mombasa and Nairobi remain the hardest-hit regions.
In Angola, the outbreak is spreading to new areas. The first confirmed case in Zaire province was recorded in the municipality of Tomboco, involving a patient under 35 who reportedly developed symptoms after consuming monkey meat. In Cabinda, authorities have closed three lodging establishments following inspections that revealed severe sanitary failures. Local epidemiological data suggests a significant portion of confirmed cases in the province originated from sexual transmission within pensions and guesthouses. The Multisectoral Commission for the Prevention and Combat of Monkeypox has stated that inspections will continue to target clandestine facilities operating outside public health guidelines.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Kasaï province is managing a dual health crisis involving Mpox and suspected yellow fever. Officials reported 77 suspected Mpox cases across nine health zones, with 16 confirmed by the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB). Luebo remains the epicenter with 13 confirmed cases and three deaths, followed by Mushenge with three confirmed cases. Additionally, 11 suspected cases of yellow fever have been reported in Kitangwa, Kalonda Ouest, Kanzala, and Tshikapa, though no deaths have been linked to yellow fever. Governor Chrispin Mukendi Bukasa has instructed the provincial Ministry of Health to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and improve patient care.
