Angurria creates record-breaking mural in the Bronx

Dominican visual artist Néstor Omar García, known as Angurria, is completing a mural in the South Bronx that aims to become the tallest in the United States. Titled ‘Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore’, the artwork covers the 29-story facade of the Morrisania Air Rights Houses, a NYCHA public housing complex located at 158th Street and Park Avenue.

Measuring over 260 feet in height, the piece surpasses the previous national record held by German artist MadC, whose mural in Miami reached 245 feet. The mural features a woman with hair rollers, an image inspired by the artist’s childhood in Los Alcarrizos, Dominican Republic, where his mother worked in a beauty salon.

The project was commissioned by Art Bridge, funded by MAC Cosmetics, and produced by Monumental, a public art production company from the Dominican creative group EPREI. The work serves as a tribute to Dominican and Caribbean identity within the New York diaspora.
