Angurria mural project in the Bronx
Overview
Dominican visual artist Néstor Omar García, professionally known as Angurria, has completed a large-scale mural in the South Bronx titled ‘Un MAR de Gente / From Every Shore’. The artwork covers the 29-story facade of the Morrisania Air Rights Houses, a NYCHA public housing complex.
Standing at over 260 feet, the mural is considered the tallest in the United States, surpassing a previous record held by German artist MadC in Miami. The piece depicts a woman with hair rollers, an image inspired by the artist’s childhood in Los Alcarrizos, Dominican Republic. The project serves as a tribute to Dominican and Caribbean identity within the New York diaspora.
The work was commissioned by Art Bridge, funded by MAC Cosmetics, and produced by Monumental, a public art production company from the Dominican creative group EPREI.
