Turkey and Armenia to rebuild historic Ani Bridge

Turkey has completed the tender process to rebuild the 10th-century Ani Bridge, a historic Silk Road structure located on the border with Armenia. Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the reconstruction contract was signed following a tender held by the General Directorate of Highways.

The medieval stone bridge, which once served as a vital customs gate for trade between East and West, spans the Akhuryan River near the Ani archaeological site. Only the bridge's supports remain after its circular arch collapsed in 1807. The Ani site, which includes the bridge, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2016.

Restoration efforts will be conducted through a joint commission established under a protocol signed in Yerevan. This project is viewed as a significant step in the ongoing normalization process between Turkey and Armenia. While the bridge's reconstruction aims to preserve cultural heritage for future generations, specific timelines and budgets for the project have not yet been released.
