Animal welfare groups and officials promote pet sterilization in Mexico

Local authorities and animal welfare organizations in Mexico are intensifying efforts to combat pet overpopulation through sterilization campaigns. In Guasave, Sinaloa, Municipal Health Director Claudia Leyva Medina reported that over 1,000 sterilizations have been performed this year, including outreach to rural communities. Despite these free services, officials noted a lack of awareness among pet owners regarding the importance of preventing uncontrolled reproduction.

In Empalme, Sonora, recent joint efforts between the local government and the Sociedad Benefactora y Protectora de Animales (SBPA) resulted in the sterilization of 35 dogs and cats. Matty Parra, president of the civil association Huellas de Ángel, emphasized that while these interventions do not solve the overpopulation crisis entirely, they are vital steps in reducing the number of stray animals and improving public health.
