Animal welfare initiatives and volunteer efforts highlighted in Romania

In Suceava, Romania, the mayor is celebrating the two-year anniversary of adopting two abandoned cats, Felix and Otilia, who have lived in the mayor's office since their rescue. Using this milestone to highlight the issue of stray animals, the mayor announced several initiatives to address the local stray dog population. Starting in September, the municipality will launch a free mass sterilization program and aim to make animal microchipping and census-taking standard practice through partnerships with veterinarians and animal protection associations.

To combat animal abandonment, the local administration plans to implement a zero-tolerance policy, including the creation of dedicated local patrols and the use of surveillance cameras to identify and sanction those who abandon animals. The mayor emphasized that the goal is to ensure citizens do not have to live in fear of attacks on the street.

In a separate instance of animal welfare support, a German family that adopted a puppy from the Fight for Animals shelter in Maramureș has returned to the region to volunteer. The family, who adopted the dog Demi, provided food and supplies to the shelter and spent time assisting with the care of other animals awaiting adoption.
