Throughout 2026 Romania’s animal‑protection agencies have stepped up rescue, sterilisation and adoption programmes. Early in the year Bucharest’s Authority for Animal Protection (ASPA) offered 1,500 free cat sterilisations, rescued more than 1,180 abandoned dogs using non‑traumatic methods and organised adoption fairs that placed dozens of dogs with families. The effort also saved a European wildcat kitten in Neamț, rescued a flooded‑metro kitten and saw gendarmerie officers secure stray dogs in Galaţi.

In July, Bucharest’s Capital Police Animal Protection Service rescued over 120 cats from deplorable conditions in Sector 2, while military firefighters saved two dogs from waterways and the Galaţi gendarmerie transferred friendly dogs to the municipal shelter. ASPA captured 127 stray dogs in the first 20 days of the month and held a dog‑adoption fair on 24 July at ParkLake Shopping Center. The agency appealed for supplies to maintain daily veterinary care and the Free Amely 2007 Association announced a free sterilisation campaign in Găvojdia for 31 July–1 August.

Later in July, the Andreea & Benji’s Happy Dogs shelter in Cluj, caring for around 100 dogs, warned it could close after failing to pay a 20,000‑lei veterinary invoice, with only 5,000 lei left in its accounts, risking a halt to medical care and new intakes. At the same time ASPA announced a new adoption fair for 8 August in Carol Park, where dogs and cats will be microchipped, dewormed and sterilised, and volunteers will provide adopter gifts. Recent ASPA figures show 120 stray dogs rescued in a 20‑day span, highlighting ongoing demand for coordinated rescue, sterilisation and adoption initiatives.

Authorities continue to stress the importance of reporting animal neglect through the 112 emergency number, emphasizing growing coordination among police, firefighters, gendarmerie and animal‑welfare organisations across Romania.
