Animal welfare initiatives promote pet adoption in Mexico
Local authorities and private initiatives in Mexico are launching new programs to promote responsible pet adoption and animal welfare. In Xalapa, Veracruz, the municipal government has introduced a virtual showcase to help dogs and cats in municipal care find permanent homes. The program features photographs of available animals on the official municipal website. To ensure stability, prospective adopters must provide proof of residence and identification. The municipality also provides free sterilization services and conducts follow-up inspections via phone or in-person visits approximately three months after adoption.
In San Juan del Río, the PetWorld initiative launched a new mobile application designed to centralize pet care resources. Presented by founder Ana Paula Sada, the app allows users to locate veterinarians, manage health records and vaccinations via QR codes, and post notices for lost or found animals. During its launch at Expo Acuario, the initiative collaborated with three shelters to host an adoption event featuring 49 dogs seeking homes, emphasizing ‘selective adoption’ to ensure compatibility between pets and their new owners.
