Animal welfare initiatives reported in Canary Islands, Europe, and Quito

In the Canary Islands, the Canarian Employment Service has completed a pioneering project that combines professional training with animal assistance. The initiative, funded with 486,891 euros, trained 20 unemployed individuals in assistance dog training. As a result, seven dogs have been delivered to users in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Tenerife, and El Hierro. These animals serve various roles, including guide dogs, signal dogs, and physical integrity dogs for individuals with autism.

On a broader scale, the European Union is implementing new regulations regarding the welfare and traceability of dogs and cats. The regulation aims to harmonize standards across member states for breeders, sales establishments, and shelters. It introduces a veterinary-led traceability system and requires owners to receive a complete medical history for acquired animals to combat illegal trade and ensure consumer protection.

In Quito, Ecuador, the Animal Welfare Unit (UBA) is holding a public contest to select three rescued pets to represent the agency. Twelve finalists, consisting of eight dogs and four cats, are being voted on via social media. The winning animals will have their images featured on three new mobile units dedicated to animal sterilization services throughout the metropolitan district.
