Anishinabek Nation criticizes Parole Board decision regarding Brayden Bushby

Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief Linda Debassige has expressed grave alarm and disappointment regarding the Parole Board of Canada’s decision to grant full parole to Brayden Bushby.

Bushby was convicted of manslaughter in the 2017 death of Barbara Kentner, a woman from the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, following a violent assault in Thunder Bay. In 2021, Ontario Superior Court Justice Helen Pierce sentenced Bushby to eight years in prison. The Anishinabek Nation criticized the decision, stating it reflects a failure of the Canadian justice system to protect First Nations women and their communities.

Bushby had previously been granted day parole in 2023, but that parole was later suspended following alleged violations of his conditions.
