Indigenous backlash to Brayden Bushby parole decision

Overview

The Parole Board of Canada granted full parole to Brayden Bushby, who was convicted of manslaughter for the 2017 assault of Barbara Kentner, a member of the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. Kentner died from health complications following the attack in Thunder Bay.

Indigenous organizations, including the Nishnawbe Aski Nation and the Anishinabek Nation, have condemned the decision. They described the parole as a ‘profound injustice’ and ‘incomprehensible,’ arguing that it demonstrates a failure of the justice system to protect First Nations women. The Nishnawbe Aski Nation highlighted that the Parole Board noted Bushby had not expressed remorse and ‘wants to move on.’

While the board deemed Bushby a low risk for reoffending, his history included substance abuse and prison conduct such as driving under the influence and carving a swastika into prison grounds. Bushby had previously been granted day parole in 2023, which was later suspended due to alleged violations.
