Anita Among exonerated in Ugandan corruption probe
Ugandan police have exonerated former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among following an investigation into allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, and abuse of office. Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the development during a press briefing on Monday, stating that while Among has been cleared, certain official procedures must still be completed to formally conclude the investigation.
The probe originated from complaints by lawyers and activists regarding potential breaches of the Leadership Code Act and questions surrounding Among’s wealth accumulation. The legal scrutiny had previously led to reports of Among being placed under house arrest.
Recent developments indicate that President Yoweri Museveni has pardoned Among, halting criminal prosecution. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, was also noted in relation to the announcement of the pardon and her release.
