Turkish municipalities launch agricultural support programs
Various Turkish municipalities are implementing agricultural support programs to diversify crops and boost rural income.
In Ankara, the Metropolitan Municipality provided 50 percent grants for canola seeds, resulting in production across approximately 24,000 decares in the Polatlı, Sincan, and Haymana districts. Officials noted that canola is preferred for its low water consumption, with farmers earning up to 14,000 lira per decare.
In Ordu, the Metropolitan Municipality is supporting the production of blueberries and shepherd beans in the Gürgentepe district. The program includes providing seedlings and seeds, alongside a purchase guarantee to ensure stable income for producers. One local producer reported that blueberry yields increased from 25-30 kilograms in the first year to over 150 kilograms following the support.
Additionally, the Toroslar Municipality has launched trial production of saffron, known as ‘red gold,’ to provide high-value alternatives for farmers. The initiative includes training seminars to teach producers the entire cultivation process, from soil preparation to marketing.
