Turkey local agricultural development initiatives

Overview

By mid-September 2026, Turkish regional agricultural initiatives continued to expand through crop diversification, material subsidies, and branding efforts. In Ankara, the Metropolitan Municipality’s 50 percent grants for canola seeds have led to production across approximately 24,000 decares in the Polatlı, Sincan, and Haymana districts.

In Ordu, support for blueberry and shepherd bean production in the Gürgentepe district—including seedlings, seeds, and purchase guarantees—has resulted in significant yield increases. Additionally, the Toroslar Municipality has launched trial production of saffron, accompanied by training seminars.

Mersin has intensified efforts to protect regional heritage and enhance economic value through geographical indication status. Following the registration of Gülnar grapes and Kan Portakalı (blood orange), the municipality is preparing applications for Bozyazı Gölevez and Mersin Black Fig, while Leklek beans, Pirömerli narcissus, and Gravga plum undergo analysis for future registration.

To support immediate production, the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has provided greenhouse rope to 3,000 producers, 100,000 sticky traps, and 15,000 liters of hydrolyzed protein. In the Erdemli district, a 70 percent subsidy program for table tomato seedlings distributed 259,200 seedlings to 200 producers, reducing the cost per seedling to 5.90 TL.

Mersin Mayor Vahap Seçer noted that the Mut district receives the largest share of the municipality’s agricultural budget due to its high output of olives, apricots, and figs. The municipality allocates 40% to 45% of its annual 100-kilometer irrigation pipe distribution to Mut. Other long-term supports since 2019 include machinery, water tankers for nomadic Yörük communities, and solar panel support for 217 producers.

Other regional efforts continue to emphasize sustainability, such as Muğla’s ‘Little Farmers Agriculture Academy’ and organic method grants in Elazığ.
