UK Counter‑Terrorism Police Lead Ann Widdecombe Murder Probe
Former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead with serious injuries at her rural home in Haytor, Devon on 9 July 2026. Police arrested a 28‑year‑old white British man in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, initially on suspicion of murder.
Following “new information and evidence,” the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the National Counter‑Terrorism Policing unit is now leading the investigation. The suspect was rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, and officials said he is not known to the Prevent programme.
Counter‑terrorism officers said they are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motive behind the attack and are reviewing security arrangements for current and former public officials. The case, previously treated as a non‑political homicide, is now being examined as a possible terrorist act.
