Ann Widdecombe killed in targeted attack, UK counter‑terrorism police lead inquiry

Veteran British politician Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her remote bungalow in Haytor, Devon, on 9 July 2026 after an assault believed to have taken place the previous afternoon. She had been a Conservative MP (1987‑2010), a Brexit Party MEP and the Reform UK spokesperson.

Britain’s Counter‑Terrorism Policing unit has taken over the case, describing it as a “targeted attack”. Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said, “It is clear that this was a targeted attack,” and added that investigators are still working to understand the planning, preparation and motivation behind it. The murder and terrorism investigations are running in parallel.

A 28‑year‑old white British man was arrested in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, initially on suspicion of murder and later re‑arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of terrorist offences. He is being held under the Terrorism Act for up to seven days. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed the suspect is not listed on the government’s Prevent anti‑extremism scheme.

Police have carried out extensive searches at the suspect’s address and are conducting digital forensic examinations. The killing has revived debate over the security of public figures; Reform UK leader Andy Burnham called for a comprehensive review of MPs’ protection measures.
