Reform UK warns neo‑fascist label could spur violence after Widdecombe murder

Reform UK spokesperson Zia Yusuf said the party’s repeated portrayal as a neo‑fascist threat could encourage lone‑wolf attacks, describing the rhetoric as "relentless" and a form of stochastic terrorism. He linked the concern to the recent killing of Ann Widdecombe, a veteran MP, MEP and former minister, noting that three British politicians have been murdered in the past decade without adequate security.

Yusuf called for stronger protection of elected officials and criticised the government’s use of its £1.2 trillion budget to safeguard democracy. He cited comments from Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who called Widdecombe a "toxic bigot", and Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey, who warned that the biggest threat to Britain comes from within. A counter‑terrorism investigation is ongoing into Widdecombe’s death, with police examining whether the political labeling contributed to the motive.
