Paris officials face legal action amid extracurricular sexual violence scandal
France is facing a major scandal regarding sexual violence in extracurricular settings, particularly in Paris. Former Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and her former first deputy, Patrick Bloche, are facing three legal complaints for failure to assist persons in danger. These complaints stem from alleged sexual assaults and rapes of minors at a public school in Paris's 7th arrondissement, where two supervisors were indicted in May.
In response to the crisis, the French Senate has launched an inquiry into the prevention and treatment of extracurricular violence. Former Mayor Hidalgo, former deputy Bloche, and current Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire are scheduled to be heard by the commission in mid-September to examine the national protection chain.
On a national level, Education Minister Edouard Geffray has announced that starting in November, approximately ten million students from kindergarten to high school will be asked specific questions about gender-based and sexual violence through an expanded annual harassment questionnaire. The initiative aims to identify victims and gather reliable data, following recommendations from the independent commission on incest. Meanwhile, in Toulouse, Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc has announced new security and training measures to combat similar violence in local extracurricular programs.
