Annita Demetriou urges focus on Cyprus negotiations following UN remarks
Annita Demetriou, President of the DISY party and Speaker of the House, has expressed deep concern regarding recent statements by UN Secretary-General António Guterres concerning the Cyprus dispute. During the UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres indicated that current developments do not appear to support the convening of a five-party or even a three-party meeting regarding the issue.
Demetriou emphasized the urgent need to create the necessary conditions to restart substantive negotiations, particularly as the Secretary-General’s term concludes in December. She urged political actors to focus on achieving real results rather than engaging in "small-scale politics," "partisan maneuvering," or "communication games."
The DISY leader stressed that the Cyprus issue must remain a top priority and called for national unity, credibility, and strategic seriousness. She noted that the party is coordinating with various local and regional councils to prepare for these critical diplomatic challenges, asserting that Cyprus cannot afford political inertia or experimentation.
