Annita Dimitriou calls for diplomatic window to restart Cyprus negotiations

President of the Cyprus Negotiations Committee Annita Dimitriou said the current period should be used to revive substantive talks on the Cyprus issue from the point where they halted at Crans‑Montana. She noted that the political leadership has been briefed on the recent visit of the UN Secretary‑General and the visit of Italian politician Fitto, and stressed that now is “the time of responsibility.”

Dimitriou urged careful preparation, methodical work, collective effort and restraint in public statements, arguing that less commentary allows diplomacy to function. She reaffirmed that the Cyprus talks must follow UN resolutions and EU principles, not become a political game or a patriotic bidding war. She highlighted the need to consider broader regional developments, the upcoming end of the UN Secretary‑General’s term in December, and the goal of convening a five‑party meeting to move the process forward.

The president emphasized that progress depends on responsible diplomatic moves and hard work rather than optimism alone.
