Annunziata Hospital inaugurates new cardiac surgery unit in Cosenza

The Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza has officially inaugurated its new cardio-thoracic-vascular surgical unit, a project developed in synergy with the University of Calabria. The facility aims to serve a catchment area of 700,000 inhabitants and address a historical gap in regional specialized care.

The new department features three state-of-the-art operating rooms (cardiac, thoracic, and hybrid), 16 inpatient beds, and six intensive care beds. To support the unit, 88 new healthcare professionals have been recruited, including 10 cardiac surgeons and 43 nurses. The initiative seeks to reduce the annual migration of over 10 million euros in healthcare spending away from the province.

Three successful procedures have already been performed: a unicuspid aortic valve replacement, a triple aortocoronary bypass, and a combined procedure involving the ascending aorta, aortic valve, and coronary bypass. The unit is designed to function as both a high-level clinical center and a medical school to train new generations of surgeons.
