Healthcare expansion in Cosenza, Italy

The Annunziata Hospital in Cosenza has inaugurated a new cardio-thoracic-vascular surgical unit developed in collaboration with the University of Calabria. The facility includes three specialized operating rooms, 16 inpatient beds, and six intensive care beds, supported by the recruitment of 88 healthcare professionals.

The unit aims to serve 700,000 inhabitants and address regional gaps in specialized care, specifically targeting a reduction in the annual migration of over 10 million euros in healthcare spending away from the province. Early operations have already included successful procedures such as aortic valve replacements and coronary bypasses.

This development is part of a broader expansion of the Cosenza healthcare network, which includes the activation of 35 new community-based healthcare structures. These initiatives utilize PNRR funds to strengthen local assistance and bring medical services closer to citizens. Vitaliano De Salazar, Director General of the Cosenza Hospital and Extraordinary Commissioner of ASP Cosenza, noted that these efforts aim to mitigate the economic and social impact of healthcare migration.
