Discord suspends video and live streaming in Brazil following ANPD order FAST-MOVING

Discord has suspended its live streaming and screen sharing features in Brazil following a preventive order from the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD). The decision is based on the Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA Digital), as the agency identified risks to minors, including exposure to violence, harassment, and self-harm.

The regulatory action follows an investigation into the platform's safety mechanisms, triggered by the death of a 13-year-old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul who reportedly committed suicide during a live stream. The ANPD noted that Discord's current technology lacks the ability to perform real-time automatic analysis of video content, making it difficult to monitor high-risk activities.

Discord stated it is complying with the order in good faith and is actively negotiating with the ANPD to restore these features. The company has requested either a revocation of the suspension or an extension of at least 15 business days to implement necessary technical and governance safeguards. While video features are restricted, the platform remains operational in Brazil, continuing to support text, voice, and audio-only communications.
