ANPD rejects Discord request to resume live streaming in Brazil

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has rejected a request from Discord to resume live streaming features in the country. The decision maintains the suspension of video calls and screen-sharing capabilities, which were restricted on August 12 following the death of a 13-year-old girl in Mato Grosso do Sul during a Discord broadcast.

While Discord claims it fully complied with the suspension order on August 17 by providing screenshots and user notices, the ANPD ruled that the company failed to provide sufficient technical evidence. The agency noted that the documentation only showed the tools were unavailable to some users, rather than proving the block was implemented across the entire infrastructure, including mobile apps, browsers, consoles, and modified versions of the application.

The ANPD clarified that it has not officially labeled Discord as non-compliant, but rather stated that the current evidence does not guarantee the restriction cannot be bypassed. Discord has challenged the ANPD’s authority to mandate these suspensions without a court order. The matter has been referred to the ANPD’s Board of Directors for a final decision.
