ANPD reviews Discord appeal following live stream suspension
The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) is reviewing an appeal from Discord following the suspension of the platform's live streaming capabilities in Brazil. The suspension was triggered by a tragic incident involving a 13-year-old girl, highlighting concerns regarding the protection of children and adolescents on digital platforms.
The ANPD identified that Discord failed to implement adequate measures to prevent access to harmful content, which contributed to the exposure of the minor to dangerous material. This regulatory action has led to a reported 800% increase in Brazilian users adopting VPN services to bypass the restrictions and access content from outside the country.
Experts and law enforcement officials have noted that while the suspension is a necessary step for safety, there is an urgent need for more effective digital policing and increased investment in platform regulation to ensure a secure online environment for minors.
