Discord live streaming suspended in Brazil by ANPD
The Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has suspended live streaming and video sharing features on Discord within Brazil. The decision follows the implementation of global end-to-end encryption for video and voice calls, which the ANPD argues prevents the platform from providing the auditable and technically secure protections for minors required by the Digital Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital).
The suspension was prompted by a tragic incident on July 22, where a 13-year-old girl in Naviraí, Mato Grosso do Sul, died by suicide during a real-time broadcast. Reports indicate that Discord took 25 minutes to terminate the stream after being alerted by the São Paulo Civil Police.
Additionally, the Brazilian Ministry of Justice reported that at least seven police operations between 2023 and 2026 involved Discord, citing the platform's use in sharing content related to animal cruelty, self-harm, extremism, and the exploitation of minors. While live features are suspended, other Discord services such as text messaging and voice chats remain available.
