Moldova energy tariffs may change due to market volatility

The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) in Moldova has indicated that natural gas tariffs may be adjusted before the end of the year. Director General Alexei Taran stated that any changes, whether increases or decreases, will depend on international market volatility, geopolitical tensions—specifically the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine—and winter weather patterns. Taran noted that the Middle East conflict has impacted 25% of global gas and petroleum production.

In addition to gas, electricity prices may also rise. Taran explained that rising gas costs directly affect thermal power plants (CET), which produce approximately 15-20% of the country's electricity. Furthermore, a hydrological drought has contributed to rising regional electricity prices.

On the fiscal side, the Moldovan government has increased the monthly electricity consumption threshold exempt from the 20% VAT from 100 kWh to 150 kWh to assist households. Regarding gas imports, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu dismissed reports of a 500 million cubic meter gas deal with Ukraine as speculation, noting that discussions are in the early stages and must align with existing contracts held by Energocom.
