The French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) is issuing personalized notifications to approximately 1.6 million women regarding a low but increased risk of developing meningiomas associated with desogestrel-based contraceptives. Brands affected include Antigone, Cerazette, Elfasette, and Optimizette.

Findings from a 2024 Epi-Phare study indicate that one in 67,000 women develops a meningioma related to desogestrel, a figure that rises to one in 17,000 after five years of treatment. The risk is noted to double after seven years of use compared to non-users, but it disappears one year after discontinuing the medication. The agency emphasizes that this risk is significantly lower than that associated with other progestogens like Androcur.

Health authorities advise women to consult a doctor if they experience persistent headaches, visual disturbances, muscle weakness, balance or speech issues, memory loss, or new or worsening epilepsy. In such cases, a brain MRI may be prescribed. The notification campaign also includes approximately 90,000 healthcare professionals.
