ANSM desogestrel contraceptive meningioma risk alert

Overview

The French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) has launched a notification campaign targeting approximately 1.6 million women regarding an increased risk of developing meningiomas associated with desogestrel-based contraceptives. Affected brands include Antigone, Cerazette, Elfasette, Optimizette, and various generics.

Data from a 2024 Epi-Phare study suggests that the risk is approximately one in 67,000 women, rising to one in 17,000 after five years of treatment. While the risk is noted to double after seven years of use compared to non-users, it appears to disappear one year after discontinuing the medication. The ANSM characterizes the risk as “low” and does not recommend immediate cessation of treatment, instead advising regular reassessment of contraception.

Health authorities have notified approximately 90,000 healthcare professionals and midwives. Women are advised to consult a physician if they experience symptoms such as persistent headaches, visual disturbances, muscle weakness, balance or speech issues, memory loss, or new or worsening epilepsy.
