Romania to begin livestock vaccination campaign to resume sheep exports

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) has announced a vaccination campaign for sheep and goats to unblock livestock exports, scheduled to begin no later than October 1, 2026. The campaign follows an action plan agreed upon with the European Commission and is designed to comply with EU Regulation 361/2022.

The vaccination strategy is divided into two parts: targeting Small Ruminant Plague (PMR) exclusively in the risk areas of Constanța and Tulcea counties, and a nationwide vaccination against Sheep and Goat Pox (VOC). ANSVSA has requested doses from the European Vaccine Bank and is working to acquire additional necessary supplies.

ANSVSA President Alexandru Bociu stated that if the vaccination process proceeds rapidly, exports could potentially resume by the end of the year. The authority noted that the successful implementation of this plan is a prerequisite for the stability and resumption of animal exports. While live animal exports are being managed through specific logistical corridors, the plan aims to ensure biosecurity and meet international standards.
