ANSVSA expands livestock inspections after 7,003 animal discrepancy in Tulcea

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) has launched nationwide inspections of sheep and goat farms following the discovery of a 7,003-head discrepancy between official records and physical counts in Tulcea County.

During the initial round of checks, which was prompted by sheep and goat pox outbreaks in areas such as Valea Nucarilor, Peceneaga, Iazurile, and Ostrov, inspectors found that while 32,239 animals were registered in the National Database, only 25,236 were physically present on the inspected farms. This represents a 21.7% gap.

Authorities noted that this discrepancy does not automatically imply missing animals, but rather a failure in traceability or data accuracy. Inspectors plan to verify animal movement documents and check the origin farms to resolve the mismatch. Additionally, nearly 1,500 animals were found with identification issues, including incorrect or mismatched ear tags. Some animals were also found on-site despite being recorded in the system as slaughtered.
