Antalya agricultural leaders call for climate adaptation and water management

The Antalya Agriculture Council (ATAK) held a meeting to discuss the agricultural sector's expectations regarding the upcoming COP31 summit and the necessary steps to combat climate change. Ali Çandır, President of ATAK and the Antalya Commodity Exchange, emphasized that preserving Antalya's agricultural strength depends on protecting natural resources, specifically water.

An ATAK survey revealed that 53% of participants perceive climate change through water-related events, while 30% link it to temperature and weather patterns. All respondents predicted that climate issues will intensify over the next decade.

Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin noted that changes in soil, temperature, and climate over the last 30 years necessitate a reshaping of production models. While milder winters have created opportunities for exotic and tropical fruits, rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns demand more efficient water management. Stakeholders called for modern irrigation techniques, water harvesting systems, and smart agriculture technologies to ensure sustainable production in regions like Alanya.
