Entities: COP31 · Prof. Dr. Şuayıp Özdemir · Prof. Dr. Emine Hesna Kandır · Afyon Kocatepe University · Council of Higher Education (YÖK)

Overview

Turkey continues to marshal private‑sector capital for the 2026 COP31 in Antalya. Building on the Host Country Agreement and a $30 bn renewable‑energy programme, ministers Murat Kurum and Alparslan Bayraktar have kept the $200 bn roadmap on track – raising electricity’s share of final energy use from about 20 % to 35 % by 2035, aiming for a 70 % renewable mix, adding 120 GW of solar‑wind, 5 GW offshore wind and at least 20 GW nuclear by 2050, and earmarking $80 bn for grid upgrades and doubled domestic gas supply. Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek reiterated the $2.5 trn annual climate‑finance gap and promoted the “Climate Implementation Bridge”. The Turkey Banks Association, with assets over 50 trn TL, serves as the official financial partner of COP31. In July, Kurum travelled to Riyadh and signed an MoU covering the Hayat Mekke project, post‑earthquake reconstruction, and joint climate‑resilient city planning. Antalya’s preparations have intensified. A dedicated COP31 office coordinates security, transport, health and logistics. Infrastructure upgrades include new overpasses, an expanded heliport and additional parking. Hotel occupancy in the historic Kaleiçi district and other zones is now at full capacity, with the Antalya Tourist Hotels and Guesthouses Association reporting 100 % bookings. Recent data show about 180 lodging establishments reporting near‑full occupancy as the summit approaches. On 23 July 2026, TÜBİTAK launched the Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) Turkey Accelerator 2026 and the Inclusive Green Transition Accelerator 2026. The programmes, run with UNIDO and several ministries, award up to 700,000 TL for top clean‑tech startups and provide dedicated support for women‑led firms, aiming to bring commercial‑ready solutions to the conference. On 31 July 2026, the Council of Higher Education coordinated a national launch for university participation.
