Antalya faces marine pollution and wastewater investigation

Environmental concerns are rising in Antalya, Turkey, due to marine pollution and wastewater mismanagement. Strong north winds, known as poyraz, are currently helping to clear the Antalya Gulf by pushing accumulated microplastics and solid waste away from the coast toward the open sea. Professor Mehmet Gökoğlu from Akdeniz University noted that this wind effect should improve water clarity and reduce coastal pollution over the next few days.

Separately, the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the discharge of wastewater into the sea from the cliffs. Following social media footage showing heavy amounts of dirty water flowing from the cliffs—allegedly from the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality's wastewater system—authorities have opened an inquiry under the Turkish Penal Code for ‘intentional pollution of the environment’. The investigation aims to determine if the discharge was caused by technical failure or negligence and to identify responsible parties.
