Turkey Mediterranean waste pollution and tourism crisis

Overview

The Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change has intensified its crackdown on Mediterranean waste pollution. Since July 1, authorities have conducted 604 inspections across six provinces, resulting in 19 facility suspensions and 52 administrative fines exceeding 118 million TL. Environmental degradation is increasingly visible. In Mersin, significant plastic and nylon pollution has been reported between Kazanlı and Tarsus. Local observer Levent Sancak described the accumulation of fragments and debris as a “disaster,” suggesting waste enters the sea via streams from industrial zones. Scientists have warned that microplastic contamination has reached levels where an emergency should be declared, identifying more than 140 recycling plants in the Adana and Mersin regions as primary sources. In Alanya, the crisis includes visible discharge and health concerns. In the Konaklı coastal area, black, foamy water with a strong odor has been observed discharging from a pipe. Simultaneously, health issues emerged among tourists at the Taç Premiér hotel, where travelers reported children suffering from abdominal cramps and fever; subsequent testing identified salmonella in one child. In Antalya, the situation expanded to include legal scrutiny following social media footage of dirty water flowing from cliffs, prompting the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to launch an investigation for “intentional pollution of the environment.” Mitigation and awareness efforts have expanded through the Antalya Blue Mediterranean Initiative. To mark World Cleanup Day, various municipalities and organizations organized extensive cleaning campaigns across Turkey. In Antalya, officials and volunteers cleaned the Ulualan coast to protect ecosystems home to sea turtles and endemic flora. In Kocaeli, approximately 500 volunteers and 13 divers collected 1 ton of waste from the Körfez Tütünçiftlik coast. In Istanbul, 400 volunteers at Moda Beach collected 435 kilograms of waste.
