Antalya faces marine pollution and wastewater leakage concerns

Antalya is facing significant concerns regarding marine pollution and wastewater leakage. Recent incidents include untreated wastewater discharge in Kaş and a major sewage line failure in the Lara cliffs, which resulted in wastewater flowing into the sea for hours, causing discoloration and odors.

While the Ministry of Health’s monitoring system has classified swimming water at many Blue Flag beaches as ‘excellent,’ critics argue these assessments are insufficient. Scientific studies suggest that limiting analysis to only two parameters may not accurately reflect sea health. Furthermore, there are warnings that beach sand may harbor higher bacterial risks than the water itself, particularly during the autumn months.

The pollution issue has drawn international attention, particularly from Germany and Russia, which are major tourism sources for the region. Local incidents in areas such as Çıralı and Alanya have already caused swimmers to leave the water due to visible contamination.
