Antalya implements marine and coastal conservation measures

Conservation efforts in Antalya, Turkey, are yielding significant ecological benefits for both marine and coastal life. In the Çıralı region of Kemer, measures taken to protect Caretta caretta sea turtle breeding grounds have led to a substantial increase in the population of sea lilies (Pancratium maritimum). Previously limited to a few specimens, these endangered plants have now spread across much of the beach, aided by the restriction of vehicle traffic on the sands.

Simultaneously, the Antalya Governor's Office has launched the ‘Blue Mediterranean Initiative’ to restore underwater biodiversity. This initiative includes underwater analysis and ecological restoration projects in districts such as Kemer and Kaş. In the Üç Adalar area of Kemer, fishing has been banned to protect marine life, while researchers work on mapping seagrass meadows and implementing artificial reefs to create new breeding habitats. The project aims to assess long-term damage to the seabed and implement systematic restoration strategies.
