Antalya marine and coastal conservation efforts
Overview
Marine protection and restoration efforts have been launched along the Tekirova coast in Kemer, Antalya, as part of the ‘Blue Mediterranean Initiative’. Following a cooperation protocol between the Antalya Governorship and the Marine Life Protection Association (DYKD), biologists and scientists began fieldwork to monitor underwater life, identify biodiversity, and conduct mapping studies. This biological data is being recorded in the ‘Mavi Atlas’ system for scientific use. To support these goals, a ban on fishery activities was established in the Üç Adalar area.
As these conservation measures continue, ecological benefits have been observed in the Çıralı region. The protection of Caretta caretta sea turtle breeding grounds and the restriction of vehicle traffic on sands have contributed to a significant increase in the population of endangered sea lilies (Pancratium maritimum).
In addition to monitoring, the initiative has expanded to include underwater analysis and ecological restoration in districts such as Kemer and Kaş. Current efforts involve mapping seagrass meadows and implementing artificial reefs to create new breeding habitats, with the long-term goal of assessing seabed damage and implementing systematic restoration strategies.
