Antalya municipality sustains year‑round mosquito control effort

Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, working under a long‑standing consultancy protocol with Akdeniz University since 2004, runs a continuous vector‑control programme. Around 1,700 staff inspect and treat sewers, fossettics, irrigation pools and other water‑holding sites, focusing on larval habitat treatment rather than just night‑time fogging.

Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Çetin noted that the city, which hosts roughly 20 million domestic and foreign tourists annually, has so far avoided cases of malaria, West Nile virus and Crimean‑Congo hemorrhagic fever. He warned that zero mosquitoes is scientifically impossible and urged residents to eliminate standing water in gardens and homes, especially as the region experienced its wettest May in 65‑70 years, raising groundwater levels along the coast.
