Turkey health, sanitation, and environment updates
Entities: Edirne Municipality · Ertuğrul Tetik · Özlem Çerçioğlu · Erman Uzun · Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Çetin
Overview
Municipal actions continued across Turkey in summer 2026. In Manisa, larvicide applications were extended to underground garages, shelters and water‑storage wells, while storm‑water grates were cleaned in all 17 districts to lower flash‑flood risk. Fire crews in Gördes extinguished a blaze that destroyed hay bales, rescued livestock and provided emergency feed.
Citizen complaints over litter and unmanaged vegetation persisted. Residents of Keşan, Edirne, called for more frequent grass cutting and better waste‑container management, and inhabitants of Manisa’s Yunusemre district renewed demands for stricter upkeep of the Karaçay Walking Area after plastic bottles and snack packaging were left behind.
In Gaziantep, the Natural Life Protection Department supplied frozen fruit and meat cocktails to cool zoo animals during the heatwave.
Coastal wildlife protection intensified. On 18 July, Antalya Governor Hulusi Şahin and his wife presided over the release of Caretta caretta hatchlings from the first 2026 nest on Çıralı beach, bringing the season’s total to 108 nests, and later in Belek and Kızılot authorities and NGOs fitted adult turtles with satellite‑tracking devices and awarded “Turtle‑Friendly Tourism” certificates to sponsoring hotels.
Municipal clean‑up drives expanded. In Beykoz (Istanbul) and Güzelbahçe (near İzmir), crews cleared overgrown weeds, debris, construction rubble and sewage sludge from streets and public spaces after resident complaints. In Iğdır, officials highlighted an acute waste problem, calling for more staff, improved bin collection and possible outsourcing to mitigate public‑health risks. In Aydın, extensive maintenance in Gençlik Park included tree pruning, weed removal and lawn reseeding, reinforcing the nationwide push for cleaner public areas and better waste management.
