Antarctica faces increased wildfire risk as invasive grasses spread
Researchers from Monash University have identified that invasive grasses are spreading across parts of Antarctica as a result of human-induced climate change. This expansion of vegetation is creating new ecological pressures by competing with native species and significantly increasing the risk of wildfires in the region.
Evidence of changing conditions is already visible. In 2024, a fire occurred on Bird Island in the sub-Antarctic, and in January 2025, a wildfire consumed 55 per cent of Amsterdam Island within the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. Scientists note that while the region is not simply 'greening,' individual islands are experiencing diverse micro-climate shifts, including changes in temperature and moisture levels.
