Invasive species expansion in Antarctica

Climate change is facilitating the spread of invasive species across the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions, creating new ecological pressures.

Research from Monash University indicates that invasive grasses are expanding due to human-induced climate change. This vegetation growth increases the risk of wildfires, following previous incidents such as a 2024 fire on Bird Island and a 2025 wildfire that consumed 55 per cent of Amsterdam Island. Scientists observe that while the region is not simply ‘greening,’ individual islands are experiencing diverse micro-climate shifts in temperature and moisture.

Simultaneously, the Antarctic Peninsula is facing threats from the invasive Arctic fly, Trichocera maculipennis. While previously confined to the sewage systems of scientific and military bases, researchers from the Centro Internacional Cabo de Hornos have observed the flies completing their life cycles in the wild, specifically in caves near penguin nesting sites. Experts suggest the warming of the Antarctic Peninsula by nearly 3 degrees Celsius over the last half-century has created hospitable conditions for these non-native species, which may have been introduced via tourist, scientific, or military vessels.
