Scientific research has confirmed the presence of microplastics in one of the world's most remote regions: Antarctica. These synthetic particles, measuring less than five millimeters, have been detected in water, sediments, organisms, glaciers, the atmosphere, and most notably, in fresh snow.

Studies conducted near the Chilean Frei Base indicate that plastic pollution is no longer confined to oceans or urban areas. Instead, wind and atmospheric processes transport synthetic fibers and fragments over vast distances, depositing them onto Antarctic ice and snow.

The Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) is actively strengthening its scientific capacity to monitor this phenomenon and understand how these particles reach such fragile ecosystems.
