Microplastic contamination in Antarctica

Overview

Scientific research has confirmed that microplastic contamination has reached Antarctica, appearing in water, sediments, organisms, glaciers, the atmosphere, and fresh snow. Findings near the Chilean Frei Base suggest that wind and atmospheric processes transport these synthetic fibers and fragments over vast distances, depositing them onto Antarctic ice.

In response, Chilean scientific expeditions, including the CARE 2026 mission involving the Royal Canadian Navy, have utilized the icebreaker AGB 46 ‘Almirante Viel’ to conduct oceanographic and environmental studies. These efforts aim to monitor the concentration of microplastics and persistent organic pollutants. The Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH) is working to strengthen scientific capacity to monitor how these particles reach such fragile ecosystems.
