Anthony Albanese defends controversial melon comments
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has defended controversial comments and hand gestures made during a July interview on the Bush Deep podcast. The remarks involved describing two crown melons gifted to him by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during a May visit to Australia. Albanese stated that the interpretation of his gestures was incorrect and noted that the Japanese ambassador has clarified the situation.
A leaked letter from Tokyo to Canberra indicated that the Japanese government viewed the media coverage as ‘sensationalised reporting’ and stated no action would be taken. Following the leak, the political coalition referred the matter to the Australian Federal Police, a move Albanese dismissed as a ‘political stunt.’
In the same podcast, Albanese also faced criticism for remarks regarding popstar Kylie Minogue, for which he subsequently apologized.
