A leaked letter from Tokyo indicated that the Japanese government viewed the media coverage as ‘sensationalised reporting’ and stated that no action would be taken. During a visit to Canberra, Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi indicated that the topic was not discussed during his meetings with Australian officials, noting that the Australian side had clarified the Prime Minister ‘did not really mean it that way.’

In a recent interview with ABC’s 7:30, Albanese admitted that his appearance on the podcast was an error, stating, “If I had my time again, which you don’t, then I wouldn’t have done that podcast.”
