Anthony Albanese faces backlash over remarks about Japanese PM's gift

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is facing intense political and diplomatic pressure following comments made during an appearance on the ‘Bush Deep’ podcast. While discussing official gifts, Albanese recounted receiving ‘royal melons’ from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. During the exchange, Albanese made hand gestures near his chest and remarked, ‘She brought two, as you do... and they’re beautiful.’

Critics and political opponents, including Opposition Leader Angus Taylor, have characterized the remarks and accompanying gestures as crude sexual innuendo regarding Takaichi’s anatomy. While Albanese’s office has issued a statement denying that the comments were intended as a reference to the Japanese leader’s body, the incident has drawn sharp rebukes from diplomatic figures.

Shingo Yamagami, Japan’s former ambassador to Australia, criticized the remarks as ‘insulting’ and ‘ignorant,’ suggesting the joke could damage the strategic partnership between the two nations. Although diplomatic cables suggest Tokyo viewed the reporting as ‘sensationalised’ and saw no ‘ill intention,’ Australian opposition leaders continue to demand a formal personal apology from the Prime Minister.
